Patti Smith celebrates Lily Gladstone during first appearance following hospitalisation

Patti Smith made her first public appearance since her hospitalisation in December at the National Board of Review Awards Gala on January 11th, where she honoured Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone.

At the ceremony in New York City, Gladstone was awarded ‘Best Actress’ by Smith. The punk-poet introduced herself to the audience by saying: “Thank you everybody. There’s a lotta you here. It’s a lot easier playing Madison Square Garden. But I’m very excited to be here.”

Smith then praised Gladstone’s acting in Martin Scorsese’s latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, stating: “It pierces the vein of human weakness, greed, cowardice, and betrayal. And what is more piercing than the face of Lily Gladstone as the camera captures the shifting tones of her interior process seamlessly embodying the courageous Mollie Burkhart?”

“Within the fabric of the film, even off-screen, Lily is like the new moon that can be felt, but not seen. She has always felt,” the singer-songwriter continued.

Smith added: “As Mollie, Lily’s sense of the space around and the rushing energy of her own blood can be felt in every gesture, every side glance, in the lift of her head, in the folding of her hands, in the burgeoning illness that can be felt cell by cell that mirrors the afflictions imposed on her people coupled with her stamina to love, to heal, and quietly condemn.”

Last month, Smith was forced to cancel dates on her Italian tour after being admitted to hospital in Bologna. The musician was discharged on December 13th after a short stay, but indefinitely postponed the remainder of her scheduled shows in the European country.

After leaving hospital, Smith took to Instagram to update fans on her wellbeing. She wrote: “This is thanking all at the hospital for their help and guidance. I am so sorry that we had to cancel concerts in Bologna and Venice. I will return to fulfill my happy obligations. This is also to thank all the medical teams globally, who attend to the people’s needs, especially those altruistically serving under fire, all healers, physicians, nurses, attendants.”

Smith concluded: “Also I want to thank everyone for sending messages of love and concern. I am resting, as the doctor ordered, grateful to have had such care, though being painfully aware that many are not so fortunate.”
