Pamela Anderson and Steve Coogan to star in Michael Cera’s directorial debut
Michael Cera is making his directorial debut, Love is Not the Answer, with a star-studded cast and a script he penned himself.
He will direct Love is Not the Answer with Pamela Anderson, Steve Coogan, Fred Hechinger, and Jamie Dornan. MK2 Films will launch the project at Cannes. Though the plot of the film is being kept under wraps, it’s described as a “precise yet unpredictable, absurdist comedy that moves between hilarity and heartbreak as it explores modern loneliness and the search for connection.”
Fast-rising hitmakers 2am are also on board, including producers of thriller-comedy Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Past Lives, and Babygirl, as well as The Moment starring Charli XCX.
Cera is expected to be present at Cannes for a different project. He will likely be there in support of Wes Anderson’s entry The Phoenician Scheme, which he stars in alongside Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Love is Not the Answer‘s Anderson will also star next to Liam Neeson in the Naked Gun reboot. The upcoming project marks a diversion from Anderson’s most recent role in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl.
Anderson previously confirmed that starring in Naked Gun has allowed her to engage further with her sillier side, as she works alongside Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer and Seth MacFarlane. This will hit cinemas on August 1st.
Recently, Coogan starred in a stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove. Far Out said that the performance was “an absolute shrine to Coogan. There is barely a moment where he isn’t on stage in one or other of his characters. […] His performance is a triumph that it’s obvious an almost unimaginable amount of work and preparation has gone into. Without a doubt, it’s Coogan’s talent that makes the show a success.”
