Oscars 2026: ‘Sinners’ becomes most-nominated movie of all-time

Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners has become the first film in history to be nominated for 16 Academy Awards.

As the Oscar nominations for this year were revealed, Sinners came out on top. It took home nods for the likes of ‘Best Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’, as well as ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Original Score’, and a nod in the newly-created ‘Best Casting’ category.

In the ‘Best Picture’ category, it will go up against Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Train Dreams.

The movie follows twin brothers, both played by Michael B Jordan, who return home to create a new blues club in 1930s Mississippi while battling racism, vampires, and colonial legacy through the power of music.

Sinners’ triumphant multiple nods mean that it has officially smashed the record of 14 nominations shared by 1950’s All About Eve, 1997’s Titanic, and 2016’s La La Land.

Trailing behind Sinners this year is Paul Thomas Anderson’s thrilling One Battle After Another, which received 13 Oscar nominations.

In 2016, Coogler was presented with the opportunity to join The Academy, but turned down the illustrious offer. The offer came in light of his second feature film, Creed, a year earlier, which saw Sylvester Stallone receive an Oscar nomination in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category.

Explaining his rationale, Coogler admitted, “I don’t buy into this versus that, or ‘this movie wasn’t good enough to make this list.'”

Far Out deemed Sinners the 12th best movie of 2025, observing, “The layers of history, folklore, and genre make Sinners an instant entry into any film school syllabus, but it is also a pure, unadulterated piece of filmmaking spectacle. There is a scene in which Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw show the musical thread connecting the past, present, and future.”

The Oscars will take place on March 15th. Watch the official Sinners trailer below.
