Key points
The Academy Awards are set to reveal the full list of nominees for the Oscars, with the most-anticipated night of awards season just around the corner.
The nominations are set to be unveiled on a live stream by the Academy. Expect upsets, snubs, surprises, and records to be broken as film fans discover which movies will be competing for cinema’s most prestigious awards in March.
That’s a wrap!
Thanks for joining Far Out for our coverage of the Oscar nominations today, as Sinners made history, and we got a glimpse of what lies ahead on March 15th, when Hollywood will gather at the Dolby Theatre.
See you again for the ceremony in 52 days!

Emma Stone sets new Oscars record
Emma Stone has a huge history with the Oscars, having previously won the ‘Best Actress’ award on two occasions, firstly in 2017 for La La Land and again in 2024 for Poor Things.
After being nominated in both the ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Actress’ categories today for Bugonia, Stone has become the youngest woman, at 37, to have received seven Oscar nominations.
Stone still has plenty of catching up to do with Meryl Streep, who is the most decorated female actor in Oscars history with 21 nominations, but it’s not an impossible mountain for her to climb.

Leonardo DiCaprio equals Robert De Niro’s record
Robert De Niro’s record of appearing in 12 ‘Best Picture’ nominated films has now been equalled by Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom he starred in Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023.
However, DiCaprio needs to go one better if he wants to equal the all-time record, which was set at 13 by Ward Bond. Despite the record belonging to the character actor, who was never a leading man in Hollywood, Bond never received a single Oscar nomination for his performances in those movies.

‘Wicked: For Good’ snubbed
At the Oscars in 2025, Wicked was nominated in a whopping ten categories and went on to win two awards. However, its sequel, Wicked: For Good, has been shut out by the Academy and failed to receive a single nomination.
Although it wasn’t expected to compete with the likes of Sinners or One Battle After Another, it still seemed inevitable that Wicked: For Good would pick up a handful of nominations, but shockingly, it has been overlooked in every single category.

Wagner Moura makes Oscars history
In the history of the Academy Awards, astonishingly, there had never been a Brazilian actor nominated for ‘Best Actor’. Thankfully, that all changed today with Wagner Moura securing a nomination for his show-stealing role in The Secret Agent.
The movie has also been shortlisted in the ‘Best International Film’ category, which currently belongs to Brazil after I’m Still Here was victorious in 2025.

Timotheé Chalamet chases Marlon Brando’s record
After his nomination in the ‘Best Actor’ category for his performance in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet has now been shortlisted in this category three times despite turning 30 only last month.
He was previously nominated in 2018 for Call Me By Your Name, and also in 2025 for the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet has now become the youngest actor since Marlon Brando in 1954 to be nominated for ‘Best Actor’ three times. Brando managed to be nominated in this category on eight occasions, albeit he rejected one of those, and if Chalamet continues at this rate, surely, he’ll one day eclipse the Hollywood great in regards to Oscar nominations.

‘Sinners’ makes Oscars history
Before today, only three films in the history of the Oscars, which is now in its 98th year, had managed to secure 14 nominations. These films are All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land. However, Sinners has not only got one better, it’s gone two better by landing 16 nominations.
It secured key nominations in categories such as ‘Best Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’, as well as ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Orignal Score’, and a nod in the newly-created ‘Best Casting’ category.

The 10 films nominated for ‘Best Picture’
Lastly, the nominations for ‘Best Picture’ have been revealed, which will see 10 films competing for the Oscar that matters most.
The nominees are Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams.

It’s becoming a nominations ceremony to remember for Sinners. Ryan Coogler has just added another nomination for his movie in the ‘Best Director’ category, and is likely the favourite for the iconic award.
However, it won’t be a walk in the park as he will have to defeat Hamnet’s Chloe Zhao, Marty Supreme’s Josh Safdie, One Battle After Another’s Paul Thomas Anderson, and Sentimental Value’s Joachim Trier.

The ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ nominees revealed
This is set to be a toughly fought category, with each nominee incredibly deserving of their nomination for the most prestigious acting prize available. Jessie Buckley, who recently won at the Golden Globes, is a frontrunner after landing a nod for Hamnet, but it’s no certainty.
Buckley is joined as a nominee by Sentimental Value’s Renate Reinsve, Song Sung Blue’s Kate Hudson, Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I Would Kick You, and lastly, Emma Stone for Bugonia.

‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ nominees revealed
For every male actor, they grow up dreaming of winning ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’, and this year, it will be fought out between Marty Supreme’s Timothée Chalamet, One Battle After Another’s Leonardo DiCaprio, The Secret Agent’s Wagner Moura, Blue Moon’s Ethan Hawke and Michael B Jordan for Sinners.
Notably, only DiCaprio has ever won this Oscar before out of the five nominees in 2026. Although Chalamet has been nominated twice before, perhaps, 2026 will finally be the year that he conquers his dream of greatness on the grandest stage in Hollywood.

The nominees for ‘Best International Film’ are…
Judging by the comments section of the official live-stream, half of Brazil is taking a break from work to support The Secret Agent at the nominations ceremony, and they’ll be relieved to know it has been nominated for ‘Best International Film’.
It will compete against It Was Just An Accident, Sentimental Value, Sirát, and The Voice of Hind Rijab.

Becoming the inaugural winner of the ‘Best Casting’ category at the Oscars is about to secure one film in the history books forever.
The nominees in this category are Sinners, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Marty Supreme and Hamnet.

Stellan Skarsgård secures first ever Oscar nomination
Aged 74, Stellan Skarsgård has finally secured an Oscar nomination thanks to his triumphant performance in Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value.
Skarsgård is joined in the category by fellow nominees Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi, One Battle After Another’s Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn, as well as Sinners actor Delroy Lindi.

‘Best Adapted Screenplay’
The last year has seen plenty of movies arrive on to the big screen that have been adapted in some shape or form, and the nominees for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ reads like a list of ‘Best Picture’ contenders.
The nominees are Bugonia, Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, Train Dreams, and Hamnet.

‘Best Original Score’ nominees
Another hotly-contested category is ‘Best Original Score’, which will be fought out by Bugonia, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Sinners, and One Battle After Another.
Johnny Greenwood (One Battle After Another) and Ludwig Göransson (Sinners) are the two leading favourites for the Oscar.

The nominees in this catgory to kick us off are Sentimental Value actors Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning, who will be cometiting against each other for ‘Best Supporting Actress’.
The list is rounded out by One Battle After Another’s Teyana Taylor, Weapons’ Amy Maddigan and Sinners’ Wunmi Mosaku.

Here we go!
It’s now time for Luke Pullman and Danielle Brooks to reveal the nominees for the 98th edition of the Oscars!
[Link]Who could be a first-time nominee?
Hollywood stars, both young and old, are in the running to score a nomination for the first time in their careers today. One name in contention is Adam Sandler in the ‘Best Supporing Actor’ category for Jay Kelly, which would be a landmark achievement for the comedy legend.
Additionally, Chase Infiniti could bag a nomination for her jaw-dropping first-ever feature film performance in One Battle After Another at 25. Stellan Skarsgard is almost 50 years her senior at 74, and today could finally be the day he is recognised by the Academy for Sentimental Value, which recently landed him a Golden Globe.

When do the Oscars take place this year?
Although we’ll find out the list of nominations today, it’ll be an agonising wait of close to two months before film fans discover the winners. The ceremony is set to take place on March 16th, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
In the US, it will be available to watch on ABC. Meanwhile, in the UK, it will be shown on ITV.

How are Oscar nominations decided?
The voting for the Oscars is in the hands of the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which currently stands at more than 11,000.
Each member casts a vote for their specific category, such as actors voting in acting categories and directors voting in the directing category. Importantly, every member is able to vote for ‘Best Picture’, which is another reason why it is the most prestigious Oscar to win.

What can we learn from the Golden Globes?
The Golden Globes is always a strong indicator of what will follow at awards season when it kicks off proceedings in January, and this year is unlikely to be any different.
If the Golden Globes is anything to go by, then expect bundles of nominations for Hamnet and One Battle After Another, which both took home the top awards in their respective categories.
Timothée Chalamet also won a major award for Marty Supreme at the Golden Globes, and it also seems he’s a certainty in the ‘Best Actor’ category. However, he has lost out in that category two times before, so it’s no certainty that it’ll be third time lucky for the 30-year-old.

What is the most nominated movie of all time?
One key record to watch out for being broken today is the most nominated movie of all time in the history of the Academy Awards.
Currently, there are three movies that are tied on 14 nominations, which are All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land. While it does seem unlikely for this record to be broken, it could possibly be tied thanks to the new ‘Best Casting’ category.
If any film is to acheive this feat today, the wise money would be on either Ryan Coogler’s Sinners or Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another.

The new category for 2026
For the first time since 2001, the Oscars will unveil the nominees for a brand-new category today: ‘Best Casting’.
It seems somewhat odd that this hasn’t been celebrated before in the history of the Academy Awards. After all, a bad cast can ruin a great script, and a good cast can make lemons out of lemonade.
[Link]Who is hosting the nominations ceremony?
While Conan O’Brien is set to return as host in March after a successful first time in charge of the ceremony in 2025, the nominations will be in the capable hands of Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman.
Brooks is no stranger to the Academy Awards, having previously been nominated in 2024 for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her role in The Color Purple.

When will nominations be unveiled?
It’s now less than an hour to go until we will begin to have a clear idea of the runners and riders for this year’s Oscars, which is set to be unveiled in a live-stream hosted by The Academy at 13:30 GMT.
The nominations ceremony is expected to be a relatively quick affair, lasting around 20 minutes, including a commercial break that will allow us all to get our breath back and process what’s gone down so far.
