Ryan Coogler reveals why he rejected invite to join The Academy

Sinners director Ryan Coogler has revealed why he rejected an opportunity to join The Academy.

The invitation was made to Coogler in 2016, following the release of his second feature film, Creed, a year earlier, which saw Sylvester Stallone receive an Oscar nomination in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category.

Speaking to the New York Times, Coogler said of the rationale behind his decision to reject the prestigious organisation, “It’s not out of animosity.”

Instead, Coogler simply doesn’t believe that his skills are best used for judging the work of other filmmakers. He explained, “And I’m not good at judging things, bro. The act of ‘Hey, pick the best thing’ is very stressful for me, even when there’s no stakes involved.”

The director then revealed that the part of his job he cares about most is being on set rather than at an awards ceremony, adding, “People see the tuxedo, they see the red carpet, but it’s real blue-collar folks making these movies happen.”

“Most days, I’m wearing coveralls and Columbia gear, trying to find solutions that aggregate up to a story,” he said of his own life.

Coogler first revealed that he rejected an invite to The Academy in 2021, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t buy into this versus that, or ‘this movie wasn’t good enough to make this list.”

The Oscar nominations for the 2026 event are set to be unveiled on January 22nd, 2026, and it’s likely that Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, will feature heavily.

Earlier this week, at the Golden Globe nomination ceremony, Sinners picked up seven nods in key categories, including ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ and ‘Best Cinematic Box Office Achievement’.

Additionally, Coogler was nominated for ‘Best Screenplay – Motion Picture’ and ‘Best Director – Motion Picture’, while Michael B Jordan was shortlisted for ‘Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’.
