Oscars 2026: Conan O’Brien hits out at AI with opening line
Conan O’Brien used his opening monologue at the Oscars to take shots at the industry’s use of AI.
The former SNL writer was expected to deliver a pointed opening monologue for the ceremony and didn’t disappoint, delivering lines on several of the actors in the audience, but most notably opened with a jibe at AI’s growing presence within the film industry.
Prior to the AI line, the ceremony opened with a pre-recorded video in which the host was seen dressed as Aunt Gladys from Weapons, the character Amy Madigan ended up winning her ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award for.
He copied the movie’s climax by appearing dressed in white makeup and a red wig, while being chased by a group of kids, just like in the film.
This was then adapted into a montage of movie parodies featuring several nominated films, including F1, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, Sentimental Value and Sinners.
The montage then ended with him at the Dolby Theatre, where the comedian, who hosted the ceremony for the second time last night, began the evening by saying, “I am Conan O’Brien, and I am honoured to be the last human host of the Academy Awards,” adding, “Next year it’s going to be a Waymo in a tux.”
Following that, he continued to take shots at some of the nominated films. He continued, “Between Hamnet and Bugonia, it’s been a big year for movies that sound like off-brand lunch meat.”
Adding, “At the beginning of Hamnet, a message comes on the screen explaining that the names Hamnet and Hamlet were used interchangeably. That’s when I knew I better buckle up.”
This was O’Brien’s second run at hosting the Oscars, receiving widespread acclaim for his comedic turn in the role.
