Oscars 2026: The complete winners list from the 98th Academy Awards
The winners and the losers of the 98th Academy Awards have been revealed, as the biggest names in Hollywood gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate the Oscars race coming to an end.
Every year, a slew of Oscars predictions fill up the internet, as film lovers and Hollywood stars predict who might receive the industry’s most coveted honour. This year, Sinners appeared poised to come out on top, breaking previous Oscar records with an eye-watering 16 nods, eventually winning. But it was One Battle After Another which was the night’s biggest winner.
Several blockbusters fought it out for the golden trophy, including One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, and Hamnet, with each of their lead stars also receiving nods in each of the acting categories, respectively.
The 98th Academy Awards are also notable for the addition of a new category: ‘Best Casting’, where Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another and Sinners all battled to become the first winner of the new accolade.
This year promised to be one of the most fiercely contested run of awards with many of the night’s top gongs still undecided by the bookies as the event began.
Amy Madigan picked up the first award of the night for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her incredible performance in Weapons. “Hahahaha,” she yelped as she accepted the golden statuette.
Next up was a surprise to nobody as KPop Demon Hunters picked up a gong for ‘Best Animated Feature’ in one of the more predictable wins of the evening, “This is for Korea, and Koreans everywhere”. The good night continued as the animated feature also won ‘Best Original Song’ with ‘Golden’, becoming the first K-pop song to ever do so.
‘Best Costume Design’ went to the marvellous work in Frankenstein, as did ‘Best Makeup Design’ in another set of expected wins. It also picked up the award for ‘Best Production Design’.
In one of the more curious moment ‘Best Live Action Short’ was actually shared by two nominees The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva, becoming only the seventh time in history that the awards have been shared. The Oscar for ‘Best Sound’ went to F1.
‘Best International Feature Film’ was admirably won by Sentimental Value, which was an award presented by Javier Bardem who, in a category with many political messages, had his own when he said “No to war, and free Palestine,” on approaching the microphone.
Ryan Coogler picked up ‘Best Original Screenplay’ for Sinners. During his acceptance speech, for which he got a standing ovation, he said, “This is an incredible honour, […] all my cast and crew, please stand up. You are all winners in my book. Every day I get to spend with you is better than the day before.” Sinners enjoyed a good night, also picking up the wins for ‘Best Original Score’ and ‘Best Cinematography’.
‘Best Actor’ looked to be one of the more fiercely contested awards, with previous favourite Timothée Chalamet falling down the rankings with the bookies and Michael B Jordan making a daring gambit for the top. And the actor who played a dual role in Sinners took home the coveted prize. “God is good. ‘Mama, what’s up?’ My dad came here from Ghana to be here […] I stand here because of the people who came before me, Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx.”
‘Best Actress’ could have been a close-run event with several stars up for the gong, but in the end, it was only going one way, and Jessie Buckley picked up the statuette for her performance in Hamnet. “Mum, dad, thank you for teaching us to dream,” Buckley continued, “It’s kind of a big deal,” she explained as he shared her award with her eight-month-old daughter. “I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a modern parent. We all come from a lineage of women who defy the odds.”
One of the night’s record-breaking events happened as Casandra Kulukundis won the first-ever ‘Best Casting’ Oscar for her work on One Battle After Another. Sean Penn continued his own abstaining of Awards cerermonies despite winning the award for his wonderful performance in One Battle After Another, marking the movie’s first acting win. The night continued to improve for those involved with the blockbuster movie, who also won ‘Best Editing’, one imagines, for making a three-hour film feel like 90 minutes.
His director on the movie, Paul Thomas Anderson, won his first ever Oscar after 14 nominations when he picked up the award for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’. “I wrote this movie for my kids,” explained the director as he apologised for the “mess” of a world we’re leaving for the next generation. His night got even better as he also accepted the award for ‘Best Director’: “You make a guy work hard for one of these. I share this with a friend of mine on the other side of the shadows, named Adam Somner. He’s up in a big bar in the sky right now, and he’s having a gin and tonic, and he is so happy with me.”
He continued: “There’s always some doubt as to whether you deserves but you cannot question the pleasure it gives me to have it […] this is a wonderful gift.”
And the night ended as it should have done with One Battle After Another picking up the night’s biggest prize, winning ‘Best Picture’. “Let’s have a martini,” exclaimed Anderson as he nodded to the impressive stature of the nominees and found himself picking up yet another award.
