Oscars 2024: ‘Oppenheimer’ leads the nominations with 13 nods

Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer leads the 2024 Oscars pack with 13 nominations, including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, ‘Best Actor’ and more.

Telling the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and based on the biography American Prometheus, the film centres around the invention of the atomic bomb. A tense tale of politics, violence and moral dilemmas, the film has received huge critical and box-office acclaim.

Starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr in major roles, all three picked up nominations in the categories of ‘Best Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’, respectively.

Director Nolan was nominated for ‘Best Director’ as well as gaining nominations in the categories of ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, ‘Best Cinematography’ and technical categories including ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Sound Design’ and ‘Production Design’.

Oppenheimer is nominated in the prestigious ‘Best Picture’ category alongside American Fiction, Anatomy Of A Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things and The Zone Of Interest.

Poor Things came in at a close second with 11 nominations, including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actress In A Leading Role’, ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ and ‘Best Cinematography’. Killers Of The Flower Moon followed with ten nominations.

Barbie received seven nominations, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’. While America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling were both nominated in their supporting categories, Margot Robbie was noticeably missing from ‘Best Actress’ while Greta Gerwig was left out of the ‘Best Director’ category.

Last year, the sci-fi flick Everything Everywhere All At Once dominated with 11 nominations. At the ceremony, it won seven awards, including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actress’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and more. It also led to one of the most moving moments of the 2023 awards season as Ke Huy Quan took home the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actor’.
