Oscars 2024: Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig snubbed for ‘Barbie’
The Academy Awards have released their complete list of nominees for this year’s Oscars. Oppenheimer leads the charge with a total of 13 nominations, followed by Killers Of The Flower Moon, Anatomy Of A Fall and Past Lives. However, one of the biggest shocks is the lack of acknowledgement for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and the film’s star, Margot Robbie.
Barbie was the biggest movie of 2023, and broke many box office records. Furthermore, as well as being a commercial success, the film, starring Robbie opposite Ryan Gosling, was admired by critics everywhere, leading many to assume it would dominate nominations at the Oscars.
The film hasn’t gone without nominations. It is up for ‘Best Picture’, has been credited for ‘Best Production Design’, and Gosling has been nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor’. However, missing from the list are Margot Robbie for ‘Best Actress’ and Greta Gerwig for ‘Best Director’.
‘Best Director’ nominations include Justine Triet for Anatomy Of A Fall, Martine Scorsese for Killers Of The Flower Moon, Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, Yargos Lanthimos for Poor Things and Jonathan Glazer for The Zone Of Interest. Given how well-received Barbie was, there was a significant amount of hype surrounding Greta Gerwig receiving a Best Director nomination, and it’s surprising to see her absent from the list.
Meanwhile, ‘Best Actress’ nominees include Annette Bening for Nyad, Lily Gladstone in Killers Of The Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller in Anatomy Of A Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro and Emma Stone for Poor Things.
In a four-star review, Barbie was described by Far Out as a movie that “may just accomplish the greatest of all art’s tasks, and incite change.”
