Oscars 2024: Mark Ronson won’t perform ‘I’m Just Ken’ without Ryan Gosling

Following Ryan Gosling’s nomination for an Oscar for ‘I’m Just Ken’ from the Barbie soundtrack, his collaborator on the track, Mark Ronson has revealed he’ll only play the song at the ceremony if Gosling also participates.

Ronson’s comments arrive after the Barbie soundtrack left the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles with three accolades on February 4th. Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Song for Visual Media’ for ‘What Was I Made For?’, alongside the soundtrack taking home ‘Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media’.

“That would be great,” Ronson said of a potential Oscars performance to Variety on the Grammys red carpet before confirming Gosling is yet to confirm or deny whether he would be keen to perform. “Did he confirm to you?” He asked the reporter, “I want to know… It’s my dream!”

Ronson was also asked if he would ever consider subbing in another singer to perform ‘I’m Just Ken’ if Gosling is unavailable, to which the producer responded: “No. I think if Ryan doesn’t do it, then we’re not doing it.”

Before the song was nominated, Gosling revealed his hesitation about performing at award shows. “Well, I haven’t been invited,” he told W Magazine. “And I wasn’t thinking about it until now, and now it’s all I’m going to think about.”

Gosling continued, “Do you get paid to sing at the Oscars? Do you have to drive yourself? What kind of scratch is involved? They pick you up at least, right?”

‘I’m Just Ken’ is one of two tracks from Barbie to be nominated for an Oscar. Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?’ has also been nominated for ‘Best Original Song,’ but it is yet to be confirmed whether she will perform as well.

Furthermore, Ronson also commented on Greta Gerwig’s absence from the ‘Best Director’ category. “To me, what she put together was a whole world that we’ve never really seen before,” he said, “But I know she’s psyched to be nominated for screenplay and picture. She’s just the most positive person ever. It’s kind of inspiring.”
