Oscars 2024: Margot Robbie breaks silence on ‘Barbie’ snub

Barbie star Margot Robbie has reflected on her snub in the ‘Best Lead Actress’ category at the Academy Awards, stating it has been an “incredible year for films”.

While Barbie is nominated for ‘Best Picture’, Ryan Gosling has also received a nod in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category and America Ferrera is up for ‘Best Supporting Actress’, Robbie and director Greta Gerwig have been ignored in their respective areas.

At a panel this week, Robbie addressed the topic, stating (via Deadline): “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

Following the decision by the Academy to not nominate Gerwig and Robbie, the duo have received an outpouring of love. Addressing the reaction, the Australian actor said: “I just suspect it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry.”

She added: “We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

After their omission, Gosling released a statement supporting the duo. “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” he said. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius.”

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” he added

The 96th Academy Awards is set to take place on March 10th in Los Angeles, see the full list of nominees here.
