Oscars 2024: Ryan Gosling is “disappointed” by Margot Robbie snub
Following Barbie director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie being snubbed at the Oscars, Ryan Gosling has shared his disappointment with the Academy.
For his role as Ken in Gerwig’s record-breaking Barbie, Gosling was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor’, and faces off against Robert Downey Jr. in Oppenheimer, Sterling K. Brown in American Fiction, Robert De Niro in Killers of the Flower Moon and Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things. Gosling is also up for a ‘Best Original Song’ nomination for ‘I’m Just Ken’.
In the most prominent snub from the 96th edition of the Oscars, Margot Robbie was omitted from the ‘Best Actress’ category. The nominees this year are Nyad’s Annette Bening, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone, Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller, Maestro’s Carey Mulligan and Poor Things’ Emma Stone.
Furthermore, Barbie director Greta Gerwig failed to break into the ‘Best Director’ category, although she is up for ‘Best Original Screenplay’ alongside her husband Noah Baumbach. Overall, the movie earned eight nominations, including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Costume Design’ and ‘Best Production Design’. America Ferrera is also up for ‘Best Supporting Actress’.
In response to the significant snubs of Gerwig and Robbie, Ryan Gosling has expressed his disappointment in a statement. “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” he said. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius.”
“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” he added. However, as he acknowledged his director and co-star’s snubs, he did say he was “extremely honoured” to be nominated.
“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history,” Gosling continued. “Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees.”
“Having said that,” Gosling added, “I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”
Addressing Margot Robbie’s snub at the Oscars 2024, Far Out wrote: “As Robbie is snubbed despite being the entire driving force behind the film and putting in an effortlessly moving performance, one that perfectly fulfils the billing, full of unspoken feelings, incredible comedic timing and an embodiment of her character so thorough it seems to be all-consuming, it feels like she was simply too pink for the cinephiles. Just like her character, she is too Barbie to be taken seriously or to be considered as anything more than a pretty face.”
