Grammys 2024: ‘Barbie’ soundtrack claims three awards

After achieving 11 nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards, the Barbie soundtrack left the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles with three of the celebrated accolades on February 4th.

At the 66th Grammys, Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Song for Visual Media’ for ‘What Was I Made For?’, alongside the soundtrack taking home ‘Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media’.

In her acceptance speech, Eilish specifically acknowledged Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie, praising her for “making the best movie of the year.”

During a discussion with reporters in the press room following their victory, Eilish clarified that she and her brother faced a creative challenge in their songwriting endeavours before being presented with the opportunity to contribute to the film’s soundtrack.

She explained: “We had been working three days a week and not coming up with stuff, and even if we were coming up with stuff it just didn’t feel right, didn’t feel good, didn’t feel real,” she said. “And I got really worried, I got nervous, I felt like it was going to be over a little bit.”

Adding: “I was in a real dark place, really, really dark place, it’s kind of hard to think back to it, but Greta came to us, and she offered us this life-changing thing we didn’t really realize was going to be life-changing like that, and we wrote [‘What Was I Made For?’] 24 hours after we saw the movie,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

The song competed against Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night’, Lana Del Rey’s ‘A&W’, Taylor Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero’, and others.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift was awarded the ‘Album of the Year’ trophy for her tenth studio album, Midnights. She beat competition from Boygenius’ The Record, Janelle Monáe’s The Age of Pleasure, Jon Batiste’s World Music Radio, Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation, Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts and SZA’s SOS.
