Oscars 2024: Greta Gerwig addresses ‘Barbie’ snub
Barbie director Greta Gerwig has addressed being ignored in the ‘Best Director’ category at the upcoming Academy Awards.
In total, Barbie is nominated for a total of eight Oscars. Categories include ‘Best Picture’, Ryan Gosling is nominated in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category and America Ferrera is up for ‘Best Supporting Actress’. However, Margot Robbie was ignored in the ‘Best Lead Actress’ category and Gerwig also didn’t make the cut.
Speaking to Time, Gerwig said of Robbie’s snub: “Of course I wanted it for Margot. But I’m just happy we all get to be there together.”
Furthermore, Gerwig doesn’t believe she was ignored by the Academy despite not being featured in the ‘Best Director’ category. She explained: “A friend’s mom said to me, ‘I can’t believe you didn’t get nominated. I said, ‘But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.’ She was like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful for you!’ I was like, ‘I know!’”
Gerwig’s comments arrive after Robbie said last month: “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”
Following the decision by the Academy to not nominate Gerwig and Robbie, the duo have received an outpouring of love. Addressing the reaction, the Australian actor said: “I just suspect it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry.”
After their omission, Gosling released a statement supporting the duo. “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius.”
The Academy Awards is set to take place on March 10th, 2024, in Los Angeles and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
