Orville Peck to perform unmasked in ‘Cabaret’

Orville Peck has confirmed that he’ll perform unmasked in Cabaret when he makes his Broadway debut later this year.

In January, it was revealed that Peck would be playing the Emcee in the famous musical. The musician will be heading to New York City to replace Adam Lambert in the role for a 16-week run. During the four-month stint, Peck will perform alongside two-time Tony nominee Eva Noblezada, who will play Sally Bowles. It will begin on March 31st and conclude on July 20th.

As Peck is known for protecting his real identity by wearing his signature mask while performing, it was presumed that he’d maintain this mystique for his spell in Cabaret. However, in a new interview, he has confirmed he’ll be unmasked on stage for the first time.

“The mask is part of my expression personally as an artist and a very big personal part of me,” Peck explained to the New York Times. “But I’m here to play this role and to bring respect and integrity and hopefully a good performance to it. It’s not about me. I’m not trying to make it the Orville Peck show.”

“The irony is that if I put my mask on, I’m suddenly not anonymous anymore,” the singer added. “The weird part is for me to be anonymous. I just take my mask off and walk around like normal and then no one knows who I am.”

This wasn’t an easy decision for Peck, but his love of Cabaret is strong enough to convince him to stop wearing his mask, adding, “I wouldn’t have necessarily done this for just anything. But this is probably my favorite musical of all time.”

Upon the announcement of his involvement in Cabaret, Peck previously hinted that he wouldn’t be masked, telling fans, “I will say this—people will have to buy a ticket to find out.”
