Hoyte Van Hoytema wins at American Society of Cinematographers Awards for ‘Oppenheimer’

The Dutch-Swedish cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema received the top award at the 38th Annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards for his work on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

The awards ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on March 3rd, 2024. The event saw Van Hoytema go up against Robbie Ryan of Poor Things, Edward Lachman for El Conde, Matthew Libatique for Maestro and Rodrigo Prieto for Killers of the Flower Moon.

Each of the five films nominated at the event has also been nominated for ‘Best Cinematography’ at the Academy Awards, but it was Van Hoytema who took the highest prize this time, hoping for a repeat win at the Oscars.

Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s historical biographical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist widely considered the father of the atomic bomb. He was played by Cillian Murphy in the film.

In a four-and-a-half star review of Oppenheimer, Far Out wrote, “Nolan’s actual craft undoubtedly plays its part in creating a work of genuine fascination. Re-creating The Trinity Test without the use of CGI is a cinematic marvel in its own right, but equally impressive is the intensity of each of cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema’s shots, beautifully capturing each pore of Murphy et al.’s face in glorious 70mm IMAX film.”

The review continued, “Nolan consistently delivers in whatever project he takes on; he knows his vision and style and creates a positive, intimate environment for his actors to provide their best work. But with Oppenheimer, he hasn’t just delivered an entertaining, thought-provoking movie as he had done with his previous efforts, but a thoroughly important one that informs even the most sheltered of us about the global situation we find ourselves in today.”
