‘Oppenheimer’ to receive Japanese release in January 2024
The indie distributor Bitters End will be handling a theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in Japan. The film is considered controversial in the East Asian country, as J. Robert Oppenheimer’s invention caused devastation in 1945.
Oppenheimer grossed $950million worldwide, but the distributor Toho-Towa, who handles most of the universal releases in Japan, decided against releasing Nolan’s film. Now, Bitters End are going ahead with the film.
“Bitters End will release Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in Japan in 2024. The decision was made following months of thoughtful dialogue associated with the subject matter and acknowledging the particular sensitivity for us Japanese,” said the company in a statement.
They added, “After screening the film, we feel Christopher Nolan has created a singular cinematic experience that transcends traditional storytelling and must be seen on the big screen. We invite the audience to watch the film with their own eyes when it comes to Japan.”
Bitters End then took to social media to write, “This is a spectacular true story drama that depicts the unknown life of a man who holds the fate of the world in his hands while at the same time facing a crisis that could destroy it.
The company signed off, “It has been hailed as Nolan’s best work ever and is considered a top candidate for various film awards.”
In a four-star review of Oppenheimer, Far Out wrote: “With Oppenheimer, Nolan hasn’t just delivered an entertaining, thought-provoking movie as he had done with his previous efforts, but a thoroughly important one that informs even the most sheltered of us about the global situation we find ourselves in today.”
