The movie Emma Stone is desperate to remake: “I think it would be really funny to do”

Emma Stone has, time and time again, proven herself as someone who is completely enamoured with the art of filmmaking, whether through her bold filmography and creative choices or impassioned discussion of the medium. In recent years, the actor has dominated the cinema through her daring work with Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos, starring in critically acclaimed projects such as Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness that have pushed the boundaries of weird cinema and cemented her as the official creative companion of the director.

However, before her love affair with all things unconventional and out-of-the-box, the actor climbed her way to the top of the industry through films like La La Land, Crazy, Stupid Love, Superbad and Birdman, being described as a true movie star and once-in-a-generation talent.

While describing her love for movies, Stone expresses her love for one film in particular, which she is dying to remake. In a world dominated by adaptations and remakes, perhaps this wish might one day come true.

Gene Wilder was a strange and eccentric character in Hollywood, building a reputation as an actor, producer and director over the years through films such as The Producer, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Young Frankenstein. He found his first on-screen role in Bonnie and Clyde after beginning his career on the stage, shortly becoming nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Producer and becoming a regular collaborator of Mel Brooks.

However, alongside his esteemed career on screen, he also became known for his work off-screen and in the director’s chair, with the filmmaker forming a creative partnership with his wife, Gilda Radner, directing the 1986 film Haunted Honeymoon, in which he and Radner star in the leading roles.

The film follows radio personalities Larry Abbot and Vickie Pearie after the announcement of their engagement, with Larry being plagued by speech problems and struggling to find a cure. However, in his search for a cure, he returns to his spooky childhood home in the middle of the countryside with his betrothed. But after arriving, they find far stranger things within the haunted estate.

While the film was not met with huge acclaim, it holds a unique cult classic status for the campy horror and sweet gothic comedy style. Stone has reiterated her surprising love for the film, describing it as the film she would most like to remake. “Haunted Honeymoon with Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner. It’s a spooky honeymoon movie. It’s very screwball comedy, and I think it would be really funny to do. Gilda is my favourite because she’s my mom’s favourite. I grew up watching her. When I hosted SNL in November, Lorne let me wear a Roseanne Roseannadanna wig in one of my photos. It was one of the coolest moments of my life”.

Stone has described the impact of many films that she was introduced to by her parents during her childhood, singing the praises of old-school classics that continue to inspire her comedic work in particular. While remnants of this style are hard to find in her work with Lanthimos, perhaps she will return to the light-hearted joviality of this genre in the future.
