Olivia Colman role recast in Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’ movie, replacement revealed
Heartstopper has confirmed that Olivia Colman will not be returning for the movie finale of the beloved Netflix series; her role has been recast.
In her place, Enduring Love actor Anna Maxwell Martin will take over the role of Nick Nelson’s mother, who is often seen as the beating heart of the emotional, tender drama, which follows two boys who explore their queer identities in a coming-of-age romance.
Series creator and writer Alice Oseman shed some light on the surprising decision, stating, “When beginning to work on the Heartstopper Forever screenplay, I knew how important it was that Sarah, Nick’s mum, appeared in the story.”
Explaining the importance of the role Colman previously played to much praise, Oseman added, “We have seen how close Nick is with his mum; she’s one of the few people he can turn to in moments of crisis… It felt nonsensical for her to be absent from this final chapter, given some of the emotional struggles Nick faces.”
However, the in-demand actor couldn’t make the scheduling for the movie work, and therefore, they were forced to leave her behind.
“Sadly, Olivia Colman was not able to join us for the film, so we made the very difficult decision to recast the role, rather than exclude the character,” Oseman revealed.
However, Oseman is sure that Martin will take to the role swimmingly, as she “perfectly embodies Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy” in scenes which will no doubt draw on her motherly affection to a role played by Kit Connor.
The artist was sure to make abundantly clear that there is no bad blood, going out of her way to thank Colman for the “beautiful performance as Sarah in seasons one and two of Heartstopper,” including “iconic moments as Nick coming out as bisexual, and we know that her performance will live on in the hearts of every Heartstopper fan”.
This is the only notable cast difference for the new movie; Kit Connor, Joe Locke, Yasmin Finney, and Will Gao will all return, and Derek Jacobi is set to enjoy a cameo appearance.
The story for the movie will be based on the sixth volume of the best-selling graphic novel series. No official release date has been confirmed yet, but it is generally expected to premiere at the author’s book launch this coming July.
