Odessa A’zion celebrates Ariela Barer replacing her in ‘Deep Cuts’: “So happy with this is the outcome”

Odessa A’zion has heaped praise upon Ariela Barer, who has been confirmed to replace her as the star in A24‘s Deep Cuts.

Last month, A’zion dropped out of the project. She was due to play Zoe Gutierrez, a character who is of Mexican heritage and is Jewish. While A’zion is of Jewish heritage on her maternal side, her father is German, and she has no Mexican roots.

After she was informed of Gutierrez’s Mexican heritage, the Marty Supreme star announced that she would be stepping away from Deep Cuts in order to make way for a Latina actor.

A’zion said at the time, “I’m so sorry that this happened. I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes!”

She added, “I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know? Fuck that. I’m out!”

A’zion also clarified that she would “never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it” and insisted “there are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role”.

Now, it has been confirmed that Barer, who is of Mexican and Jewish heritage like Gutierrez, will star in Deep Cuts.

Taking to Instagram Stories, A’zion shared an article confirming Barer’s casting alongside the caption, “THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT BABY,” as well as tagging her peer in the post.

A’Zion continued, “Always stand up for what I KNOW is right. I stand by my decision and am so so so so so happy this is the outcome. C’mon baby!! She’s gonna eat it up”.

Additionally, Barer repaid the compliment and shared her gratitude to the Marty Supreme star for backing away from the project on moral grounds.

She wrote, “And a genuine major shoutout to Odessa A’zion for always leading with integrity and being an absolute real one for as long as I’ve known her.”

Deep Cuts, which also stars Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey, is expected to begin production imminently.
