Odessa A’zion quits A24 movie ‘Deep Cuts’ amid backlash to casting: “I’m so so sorry this happened”
Marty Supreme star Odessa A’zion has announced that she will be dropping out of Sean Durkin’s A24 movie, Deep Cuts, following a social media backlash to the casting decision.
Deep Cuts is an adaption of Holly Brickley’s 2025 novel that follows two college friends in Berkeley in the 2000s, who form a volatile creative partnership. In the book, the character Zoe Gutierrez is of Mexican heritage and is Jewish. While A’zion is of Jewish heritage on her maternal side, her father is German.
Importantly, the character is a close friend of the music critic Percy, set to be played by Cailee Spaeny, and the ex-girlfriend of Percy’s love interest Joe, who is set to be played by Drew Starkey.
Taking to her Instagram Stories on January 28th, A’zion wrote over a black screen, “Guys! I am with all of you and I am not doing this movie. Lemme make myself clear.”
She explained, “Thank you guys for bringing this to my attention.” D’Azion continued, “I’m so sorry that this happened. I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes!”
A’zion went to admit that she wasn’t familiar with the source material: “I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know? Fuck that. I’m out!”
Clarifying her stance on representation and inclusion in the industry, she wrote, “I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”
Originally, Austin Butler and Foe actor Saoirse Ronan were set to star in the romance, but were forced to drop out due to scheduling issues.
A’zion recently shot to fame after playing Rachel Mizler, the love interest of Marty Mauser, played by global star Timothée Chalamet, in the Josh Safdie ping-pong epic, Marty Supreme.
