Oasis dedicate ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’ to Ozzy Osbourne at Wembley Stadium

Following the sad passing of Ozzy Osbourne earlier this week, Oasis dedicated ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’ to the Black Sabbath frontman at Wembley Stadium on July 25th after unfurling a banner of him during ‘Live Forever’.

The musical world, and beyond, has been grieving the death since his family delivered the devastating news on July 22nd. A statement signed by his wife, Sharon, and four of his children reads: “Their message reads, “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love.”

No cause of death has been revealed. However, it was later reported that air ambulance paramedics spent two hours trying to save his life at his family home in Buckinghamshire, England.

Poignantly, during their first of seven concerts at Wembley Stadium, Oasis chose to unfurl a banner of Osbourne, in his 1970s heyday, on the stage during a performance of ‘Live Forever’. They previously unfurled a banner of the late Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota during the same song on the opening night of the tour in Cardiff following his tragic passing.

Before playing the next song of their set ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’ after the banner was introduced, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher told the 90,000-strong crowd: “I want to dedicate this one next to Ozzy Osbourne. ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’.”

Many musical acts, including Coldplay, Alice Cooper, and Lady Gaga, paid unique tributes to Osbourne at their concerts on July 22nd, just hours after his death was announced. Additionally, other acts such as Judas Priest and David Lee Roth, who toured with him, used their shows to celebrate his legacy.

Since Osbourne’s death, Black Sabbath Bridge on Broad Street in Birmingham has become a shrine to the late vocalist. Fans have also covered the Black Sabbath mural on Navigation Street with flowers in memory of Ozzy.

Billy Corgan has also mooted the idea of an annual charity concert to be held in Osbourne’s memory, saying on a US radio show, “I almost think there should be an annual Ozzy concert where we just come together and do a charitable event.”

Oasis return to Wembley Stadium on July 26th. They will also play the historic stadium on July 30th, August 2nd, and August 3rd. Then, once they return from North America later this year, Oasis will play two further shows at Wembley Stadium in late September.
