Nick Frost disables comments on social media following ‘Harry Potter’ casting backlash

Nick Frost has disabled comments on social media following his casting in the HBO remake of Harry Potter following a backlash to his involvement in the series.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Frost is to play Rubeus Hagrid in the forthcoming series based on JK Rowling’s set of books. John Lithgow was also announced as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall.

Additionally, HBO shared that Luke Thallon will play Professor Quirrell and comedian Paul Whitehouse, best known for The Fast Show, will portray Argus Filch.

Following the announcement, Frost took to Instagram to share his joy at the casting. In the picture, he was holding a copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone along with the caption: “You’re a wizard, Harry!!! Thank you for trusting me with such a loyal, gentle and courageous half-giant like Rubeus Hagrid.”

In tribute to the late Robbie Coltrane, Frost continued, “Robbie, I promise I won’t let you down.”

However, due to Rowling’s remarks on the transgender community, Frost’s involvement in the series sparked a negative reaction from many and the actor then disabled comments on the post after it had already garnered more than 1,400 comments.

Last year, HBO defended Rowling’s involvement in the series, stating, “We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter – the heartwarming books that speak to the power of friendship, resolve and acceptance.”

The network continued: “JK Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”The first series of the new Harry Potter series is expected to be broadcast in 2026 on HBO.

The casting of the titular character, along with Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, is yet to be revealed, but more than 32,000 children have applied.
