New York’s Governor’s Ball delays headliners and cancels sets due to extreme weather

After going through a show-stopping first show on June 6th, Governor’s Ball in New York is facing setbacks for its headliners on June 7th due to inclement weather.

Being one of the biggest events in New York City for the summer, the outdoor festival had promised major headliners for this year’s festival, with Tyler the Creator and Mk.gee performing on the first night. Now, as fans begin to settle in for the second day of the festival, many acts scheduled to perform earlier in the day are getting cancelled altogether or moved to later in the day.

This has included Lexa Gates, Yaya Bey, and Backfires’ sets being cancelled and indie darlings Car Seat Headrest being moved to later in the day, now set to go on at 7:30pm. The festival has also announced that fans will not be let in the doors until 4:30pm, with both Artemas and The Lemon Twigs going on at 4:45pm.

These setbacks have come as the festival is set to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Founded in 2011 by Jordan Wolowitz, Tom Russell and Yoni Reisman, the festival has been known for featuring an array of artists from the worlds of rock, hip-hop, and electronic music descending on Governor’s Island for a weekend of music. During its inaugural festival, the shows set a record for the highest attendance record for any event on Governor’s Island.

As the festival proceeds with its new schedule, main headliner Olivia Rodrigo has been moved from the 8:30 slot to 9:25, with fellow headliners Feid and Wave to Earth now going on on separate stages at 8:30 and 8:45, respectively.

Since its inception, the festival has moved to Randall’s Island in New York City, where it has stayed up until 2019. During its eight-year stint at the venue, including Kid Cudi, Jack White, Eminem, and The Strokes. In 2014, the festival also hosted hip-hop legends Outkast for a handful of their reunion shows. It has since been moved to Flushing Meadows Corona Park starting in 2023.

However, this is not the first time that the Governor’s Ball has suffered from significant delays. The 2013 festival was plagued with weather issues that caused most of the festival to be cancelled.

There was also a rain-out during the 2016 festival, but artists such as Courtney Barnett and Two Door Cinema Club announced that they would be playing pop-up shows.
