Prince gave André 3000 advice for the Outkast reunion performance

In 2014, Outkast reunited onstage at California’s Coachella Festival for the first time in years. The highly anticipated reunion didn’t quite deliver, prompting Prince to give André 3000 some advice.

Amidst the thousands who turned up to see Outkast headline the festival were Paul McCartney and Prince, the latter of whom gave André 3000 a call to review their performance the next day.

André 3000 explained the conversation to GQ, recalling: “‘You know what your problem is?’ Prince asked. And I’m like, Fuck. He said, ‘You don’t realise how big y’all are.’ And then he was like, ‘You got to remind people who you are.’ And from that point on, I was like, Okay.”

Following Prince’s advice, Outkast went on to play an impressive number of festival stages throughout the summer, but they are yet to tour again. André 3000 seems to be focusing his efforts on his solo endeavours – he just unveiled his first new album in 17 years.

Titled New Blue Moon, the record marks André 3000’s debut solo record, released three decades into his career. Moving away from hip-hop, the album comprises a collection of flute instrumentals.

New Blue Sun was something that I realized, whoa, I really want people to hear it,” he shared ahead of the release, “I really want to share it. That’s my only gauge. I have to like it as a person, as an artist myself, because if I don’t like it I can’t expect nobody else to like it.”

New Blue Sun is out now. Listen below.
