Lady Gaga stars in the new trailer for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
Riding on the waves of high anticipation, Warner Bros have just released the brand new teaser trailer for Todd Phillips’ sequel to Joker.
During a time when the discourse around movies based on superhero comic books only signals their inevitable decline, one film that is repeatedly pointed to as an exception is Todd Phillips’ 2019 psychological thriller, Joker. Starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, it received widespread critical acclaim as well as commercial success.
In addition to nabbing multiple accolades at the most prestigious award ceremonies, Joker also managed to place itself at the centre of conversations surrounding popular culture. While many fans claimed that it was a much-needed representation of the mental health issues that plague men in modern society, others insisted that Phillips’ work reinforced such problems by glorifying those pathologies.
Despite the controversy surrounding the movie, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding its upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. Featuring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn alongside Phoenix, fans are obviously curious to see where the narrative goes from here as Phillips continues building his own interpretation of the Joker’s extensive mythology.
However, some fans are also concerned about the fact that the Joker sequel has been designed as a musical. This is understandable to some extent because a musical might just detract from the gritty and dark tones of the original.
“We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it’s a film where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film,” Phillips said in an interview while addressing those concerns.
The filmmaker added: “Arthur [Fleck]’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him. That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film… it didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”
It’s still too early to tell, but the beautifully shot footage featured in the teaser might help to placate some of the more anxious Joker fans. Watch the new trailer below.
