Natalie Portman and Olivia Rodrigo slam ICE after latest shooting in Minneapolis
Actor Natalie Portman and superstar Olivia Rodrigo have hit out against ICE after the latest shooting saw ICU nurse Alex Pretti shot dead in Minneapolis on January 24th.
In response to the increasing civil unrest in Minneapolis due to the Donald Trump administration’s pointed surge in ICE officials in the region, Portman shared with a crowd at Sundance Film Festival: “What’s going on in our country right now is absolutely horrific, with the federal government, Trump’s government, Kristi Noem, ICE…”
She added to Deadline, “What they’re doing is really the worst of the worst of humanity.”
The Black Swan actor continued, “Then you also have the best of the best of humanity, for the way people are showing up for each other, in community, and Americans coming out to support each other, protect each other, and fight against injustice.”
Portman rounded out her nuanced critique by clarifying, “I could not be prouder to be American right now, by the way the Americans are acting, and I couldn’t be sadder to be American right now by the way that the government is acting.”
Global popstar Olivia Rodrigo also made her position on the matter clear through her Instagram Stories, where she posted: “ICEs actions are unconscionable but we are not powerless. Our actions matter. I stand with Minnesota.”
Not two weeks before the murder of Pretti, an ICE agent killed mother-of-three Renee Good, which has since prompted escalating clashes between law enforcement and protesters.
Speaking on Good’s behalf, a host of other celebrities used their platform to stand with Minnesota. For example, popstar Billie Eilish reposted a series of Instagram Stories attacking ICE, describing them as “a federally funded and supported terrorist group under the Department of Homeland Security that has done nothing to make our streets safer”.
Additionally, Bruce Springsteen also continued on his tirade towards Trump, this time dedicating the song ‘The Promised Land’ to Good at his show in New Jersey, where he insisted to the roaring crowd, “ICE should get the fuck out of Minneapolis”.
