Which musicians have been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame more than once?

Most musicians aren’t in the business for the trophies. Music shouldn’t be an Olympic sport every time someone goes into the studio, and even the greatest artists of all time tend to look at the music as an extension of themselves rather than something they should use to outdo their competition. Then again, it’s not like it doesn’t feel good when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame decides to shower their favourite artists in style.

But even in the context of rock and roll, the Hall of Fame has been greeted with a lot of think pieces ever since it started. It might have started off strong in some ways, but the minute that people got past the cornerstone players in the genre, like Chuck Berry and Little Richard, everyone had to throw in their two cents about who did or didn’t deserve to be in alongside the greats, whether that’s someone who either didn’t have enough hits to be in or was too uncool to deserve the accolade.

For a handful of rockers, though, it was possible for them to earn the nod a few times over. Many of the greatest artists have different facets of their careers, and that normally means trying their best to make something new once they move on to a solo career or form an entirely new band from the ground up.

Even though that can leave fans of lesser acts like Grand Funk Railroad feeling jaded that their favourite band didn’t get inducted yet, it’s worth it to realise how much goes into inducting someone into the Hall of Fame. Anyone can simply induct a band they consider rock and roll, but when looking at the reasoning behind each pick, it’s as much about their impact as it is about the music itself.

So, how many people have been inducted into the Hall of Fame multiple times?

Ever since the Hall of Fame opened in the late 1980s, 27 different people have been inducted multiple times. But that doesn’t mean they were tied to their band and solo careers, either. Eric Clapton had already received the honour as a solo artist and a member of Cream, but given how The Yardbirds were inducted as well, both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page have shared the honour of getting their names etched into rock and roll history.

Although some acts, like The Beatles, have had every individual member get a nod, there are also some that have managed to create a whole band underneath them. Even if Foo Fighters is a glorified solo act for Dave Grohl in many respects, seeing him inducted as a frontman and the drummer for Nirvana is a decent way of showing the impact he’s made on rock and roll culture.

The only problem is that some people are still severely overlooked. For instance, out of all 27 members who have paid multiple visits to the induction ceremony, only a handful are women, with Stevie Nicks and Tina Turner being among the only females inducted twice.

While the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has a wide umbrella of potential inductees to look over every time they have a ceremony, it’s not shocking why these artists managed to break down barriers worthy of two spots. The world of rock and roll might have been started by people like Berry and Richard back in the day, but if their successors hadn’t carried on their gospel like this, the entire genre would look a lot different.
