The movie Christopher Nolan compared to a suicide mission: “Those guys really went for it”
There’s a level of grandeur and scale to everything Christopher Nolan creates. His films defy the rules of our world as they create an entirely new level of logic to immerse us in a new world. From the mind-bending reality of Inception to the futuristic scope of Tenet, the director has defined a new era of blockbuster cinema through his elaborate visual worlds and disorienting stories, becoming the very definition of a modern filmmaker.
However, Nolan is in competition with many other directors who have been praised for something similar, with one in particular perhaps trumping him through his mastery of creating a spectacle.
Denis Villeneuve is one of the most accomplished and assured directors working today, with a resolute vision that is seemingly resistant to the pressures of what he is trying to create. Many filmmakers would hide from the challenges that he has embraced throughout his career, not only creating original work but adapting beloved stories from other great directors, recently helming a recreation of the Dune universe which was first made by the great David Lynch.
This has since come to be known as his titular masterpiece, with staggering attention to detail that can be seen through the ingenious use of light, production design and use of real locations to create a lived-in and authentic universe. However, Villeneuve perhaps had a trial run of this particular challenge in 2017 after adapting Ridley Scott’s 1982 film, Blade Runner. Given the legacy of the British auteur, who is known for classics such as Alien and Thelma and Louise, the responsibility and pressure he faced was immense, something that Nolan commended him for.
When describing Villeneuve’s adaptation of the dystopian science fiction story, Nolan said, “It was a real pleasure. I love [director] Denis [Villeneuve]. He bravely took on what he referred to as a suicide mission, following such a huge film that I was such a fan of. I thought he did a great job. Those guys really went for it. You have to admire that. There are a lot of movies that are on such a pedestal that to try and either remake them or follow them up would be too tricky”.
While some artists would be too intimidated by the level of scrutiny and comparison that they would be subjected to after remaking a classic film, some are emboldened by this process and manage to persevere without dwelling on how people will react to the movie. Nolan would perhaps not choose to embark on the so-called suicide mission of recreating such a project, but he will soon be setting out on his own suicide mission as he adapts one of the most influential novels of all time for the screen.
His version of The Odyssey is set to be released in 2026, with actors like Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Elliott Page, Zendaya and Matt Damon joining the cast. It is an ambitious project to realise on the big screen, and while some would expect this type of curveball from Villeneuve, it came as a slightly surprising move from Nolan, who was perhaps inspired by the boldness of his fellow director.
