Molly Ringwald condemns ICE and Donald Trump regime: “This is a fascist government”
Molly Ringwald has shared an emotional social media video condemning the actions of ICE.
In her four-minute video, which she uploaded on January 27th, Ringwald urged her followers to take the protests and make their voices known amid the actions of ICE in the wake of Alex Pretti and Renee Good’s deaths in Minnesota.
She also hit out at the current administration, headed by Donald Trump, which she claimed was now a “fascist government” and had made America become a shadow of its former self.
The Breakfast Club star began, “There’s something horrible, horrible going on in our country right now. And we have one of the greatest countries — had one of the greatest countries in the world. And I’ve also been so proud to be an American but right now this is a fascist government.”
She continued, “It’s not becoming a fascist government. It is a fascist government. And ICE is brutalising people.”
Imploring others to speak up, Ringwald added, “I don’t care how you identify, if you’re a Democrat, if you’re a Republican, if you’re independent, if you don’t like to be political at all — it doesn’t matter. You have to look at what kind of country you want to live in.”
Ringwald then used the example of France, where she used to live in her 20s, during World War II, stating, “They were taken over by the Nazi’s. They were invaded, they were taken over, and a lot of people, a lot of people, collaborated, and there were people who did not collaborate and were part of the resistance. Eventually, they got their country back, and those people who collaborated were found to be criminals.”
She then reminded those watching the social media video that ICE’s conduct is impacting “human beings” and warned people, “If you don’t care about that, if you only care about yourself, then realise you are going to be seen as a collaborationist.”
Ringwald again urged people to “use your voice and protest” before describing ICE agents as “monsters” who “have forgotten that they are human beings”. She emotionally continued, “Please don’t let yourself become like that”.
Notable other names from the film industry to have also condemned the actions of ICE in recent days include Natalie Portman, Ethan Hawke and Giancarlo Esposito, the latter of whom called for a “revolution”.
Meanwhile, John Leguizamo has called upon any of his ICE-supporting fans not to support his work going forward, saying in a video message, “If you follow ICE, unfollow me. Don’t come to my shows and don’t watch my movies.”
