Mitski says Donald Trump’s administration is “disgusting, ugly, gross”

Mitski has condemned Donald Trump’s administration, which she has described as “disgusting”.

The American singer-songwriter, who releases her new album Nothing’s About to Happen to Me on February 27th, 2026, through Dead Oceans, has been a longstanding critic of the president.

During a new interview with Vulture, upon being asked to “describe something ugly to you”, Mitski replied, “I’m not trying to make a statement, but truly, truly: this administration. Disgusting, ugly, gross. Stop it.”

In the same conversation, she also spoke out against the medical system in the United States, and named “getting cancer in America” as her “most repetitive, long-term fear”.

Mitski added of her anxiety of falling ill in the US, “It’ll be hard. It’ll cost millions of dollars — if I get to heal from it. If I get into remission, it might ruin my life.”

In 2016, after Trump was elected to the White House for the first time, Mitski told Time Magazine that she was reduced to tears out of disbelief that he had won the vote.

She explained, “I don’t know the first thing about how to create change systemically. My brain can’t comprehend how to do anything about the overall building that is America. But I know how to make music. I know how to reach individual hearts and emotions.”

Additionally, in 2017, Mitski contributed to the Our First 100 Days compilation, which protested against Trump each day during his first 100 days in office with a different song.

Next week, Mitski will begin a residency at The Shed in New York, which she will follow with special shows in Mexico City, Los Angeles, Istanbul, Jakarta, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Sydney, Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok.

She will also play a run of intimate UK dates in May, visiting Leeds, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, and Kingston.
