Mindy Kaling’s new comedy series ‘Not Suitable For Work’ set for Hulu

US Office actor Mindy Kaling is developing a new comedy series, Not Suitable For Work, for Hulu.

Last April, it was revealed that Kaling was in talks with Hulu over a potential new series. The series had been given the working title Murray Hill, which is the area of Manhattan where Not Suitable For Work is primarily set.

According to the official synopsis, Not Suitable For Work “centers around five work-obsessed twenty-somethings striving for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill.”

Not Suitable For Work marks Kaling‘s third collaboration with Hulu. The streaming service previously homed the final three seasons of The Mindy Project and the 2019 adaptation of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Kaling is the creator of the new comedy series and will also serve as an executive producer. At this stage, there is no information regarding the cast of Not Suitable For Work, and when the first series is expected to arrive.

In a new interview with Time, Kaling said of the forthcoming series: “When the announcement came out, I called Murray Hill ‘the sexiest neighborhood in Manhattan’ or something. And people online were like, ‘Mindy doesn’t understand New York at all!’ That was funny because I thought it was so obvious that Murray Hill was not sexy.”

Kaling also compared Murray Hill’s lack of cultural heritage compared to other areas in the Manhattan district, noting, “There’s movies and songs and short stories written about every other part of Manhattan except Murray Hill. I love movies that romanticize the Upper West Side like You’ve Got Mail. I filmed a show set in Tribeca and the West Village. I’ve had a number of heroines run through the Empire State Building.”

She then stated that “Murray Hill has the reputation as the charmless finance bro area with some good Indian restaurants” and that “it’s not trendy”.

However, due to the wealth of people in their 20s who live in the area, Kaling thought it was ripe for a comedy series, adding, “The best thing you can say about it is that it’s a hub for young professionals. So I thought it would be so funny to tackle this neighborhood that’s so overlooked and kind of dissed.”
