“Police barriers and crowd control”: Meryl Streep says of chaotic ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ filming experience

Meryl Streep has shed light on her experience filming the long-awaited Devil Wears Prada 2, which was chaotic, to say the least.

Streep described life on the set for a new Harper’s Bazaar cover story, which centred on her co-star, Anne Hathaway.

The Mamma Mia actor shared, “Even though we were aware of the impact of the first film two decades ago, I think none of us were prepared for the ambush of both goodwill and avid attention that engulfed us.”

She added, “We needed police barriers and crowd control. Buses of fans turned up, and paparazzi swarmed and in one case kept jumping in front of the camera and the shot and got in a kerfuffle with the crew!”

The two leads had different reactions to the general hubbub. Streep revealed, “Annie kept her cool, but I was unnerved.”

Hathaway also shared an anecdote about tumbling down some stairs after a wardrobe malfunction. Because the film set was awash with avid onlookers, Hathaway thought more of the media consequences of the fall than her own safety.

The Princess Bride star shared, “I was aware that I was falling, I was aware that I was being photographed, and I was also aware that, like, so many people on the crew, their hearts had just jumped up into their throat, so I needed to get up quickly to make sure they knew I was okay.”

Little is currently known about plot particulars for The Devil Wears Prada 2, but it is hotly anticipated, coming two decades on from the first film, which took the comedy world by storm upon its release back in 2006.

Additionally, David Frankel returned to his role at the helm of the movie, with filming having taken place from June to October 2025. Aline Brosh McKenna also returned as a screenwriter.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will hit cinemas on May 1st.
