Kate Hudson reveals “bad call” turning down ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ role

Kate Hudson recently admitted she regrets turning down the lead role as Andrea “Andy” Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada, explaining that her decision to step down was a “bad call”.

Before Anne Hathaway was selected to play the coveted role, director David Frankel met with several other rising and acclaimed actors, including Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman. He also held a meeting with Hudson and wanted to give her the role, but her schedule made things challenging.

As a result, she turned down the role but now regrets the decision and recognises it as a significant missed opportunity that she should have approached differently. Discussing this on Capital’s Capital Breakfast show, she admitted she should have “made it happen”.

“That was a bad call,” she said. “It was a timing thing, it was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t. That was one where when I saw it I was like, ‘Ugh.'”

While she also said that “everything happens for a reason,” she still should have made the effort to make it work, considering how much the movie’s success would have advanced her career.

“It’s funny. It’s waves of things that are happening and people shooting at different times,” Hudson said. “It’s not like you don’t do them because you don’t want to do them,” she continued, “It’s like, ‘Oh, you’re doing something else.’ And it just sucked, you know?”

Despite the movie becoming one of Hathaway’s most career-defining roles, Frankel was first determined to cast McAdams and reportedly offered it to her three times. However, she felt it wasn’t right for her at the time, ultimately turning it down to work on different projects.

However, she reflected on the opportunity later, admitting that while she felt anxiety about not taking part, it was the right thing to do. “I felt guilty for not capitalising on the opportunity that I was being given,” she told Bustle, adding, “because I knew I was in such a lucky spot. But I also knew it wasn’t quite jiving with my personality and what I needed to stay sane.”

Hudson recently made headlines after discussing her interest in potentially portraying Stevie Nicks in a new biopic. While nothing is currently in the works, she discussed her desire to play someone “interesting” on screen, though she admitted she feels she is now too old to portray the Fleetwood Mac legend.

“Who wouldn’t want to play Stevie Nicks? I think, I think I’ve out aged that,” she said during an interview for BBC Radio 2. “I think a little too old to play young Stevie Nicks now, but, but I would like to write a musical that’s really, that’s really kind of something I’d love to that’s like on my bucket list.”
