Mark Hoppus recalls The Cure’s Robert Smith trying to kiss him: “I should have done that”
Blink-182 singer Mark Hoppus has shared details of an encounter with his “hero” Robert Smith and revealed that The Cure frontman once attempted to kiss him.
Hoppus, who earlier this week released his autobiography Fahrenheit-182, explained the incident took place after his band, Blink-182, headlined Wembley Arena in 2004. At the concert, Smith joined the band on stage to perform their collaboration, ‘All of This’.
After the show concluded, Blink-182 and Smith continued with the celebrations at an afterparty, at which point The Cure singer tried to show his appreciation for Hoppus with a kiss.
“My wife and I are like, ‘Alright, we’re out. See you later,’ and then Robert tries to kiss me,” Hoppus said in a new interview with Us Weekly.
He then revealed that only members of Blink-182’s crew witnessed the incident before sharing his regret at not accepting the invitation to kiss Smith, adding, “He was my hero. I grew up listening to this guy’s music and it changed my life forever. Then he tries to kiss me at a party and I’m like, ‘I should have done that. Why not?’ It’s a much better story than he tried to kiss me and it was awkward. It would’ve been rad to be like, ‘Yeah, made out with my hero.’”
The anecdote is also mentioned in Hoppus’ book, however, he didn’t seek permission from Smith to mention it, explaining, “I should have called him or given some kind of warning or something. But I don’t know — how do you have that conversation? ‘Hey, remember when you tried to make out with me?’ Because we’ve never addressed it.”
As Hoppus says, he and Smith have never discussed the incident despite having several more encounters over the years, adding, “It’s been totally cool and nobody’s talked about it.”
Additionally, Hoppus reiterated that he wasn’t upset with Smith but was taken aback with surprise, continuing, “I wasn’t bummed in the slightest. I was more, like, flabbergasted that nobody else saw it.”
