Margaret Qualley reveals The 1975’s Matty Healy inspired her character in ‘Honey Don’t!’

Margaret Qualley has revealed that her character in the upcoming dark comedy movie Honey Don’t! was inspired by The 1975 frontman Matty Healy.

The actor made the revelation in a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, where she explained her process for getting into the lead role, where she plays a lesbian detective investigating a suspicious death.

Qualley elaborated on the genesis of her part by saying: “My character is very confident and talkative. She’s not a woman of few words. I think that sometimes I’ve made myself comfortable by knocking myself down. She’s the opposite of that. She’s in her power and smart and sexy.”

Going on to admit the various influences which inspired her take on the character, the actor then added: “She’s a bit like a cool-guy player. I don’t know why, but for some reason, I made my physicality kind of like Matty Healy. I tried to do it like Matty Healy would do it. I got to feel what it would be like to be a guy hitting on a girl.”

Qualley’s close imitation of The 1975 frontman’s qualities comes as a result of her husband, music producer Jack Antonoff, having previously worked closely with the band, particularly on their most recent album, 2022’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language.

This has also evidently had an impact on the actor herself, as alongside her various current Hollywood roles, she has also launched a music career, releasing two new singles under the alter ego Lace Manhattan, which appear on the soundtrack of Honey Don’t!.

The film comes as the second instalment of Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s “lesbian B-movie trilogy”, following on from the hit Drive-Away Dolls last year. It is set to be released in cinemas on August 22nd.
