Watch new trailer for Ethan Coen’s queer crime comedy ‘Honey Don’t!’
The new trailer for Ethan Coen’s crime comedy Honey Don’t!, starring Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza as leads and Chris Evans as the film’s antagonist, has just been released.
The movie has previously been described as the second entry of a “lesbian B-movie trilogy” that follows the unorthodox Drive-Away Dolls. However, the new trailer cements the movie as having a stand-alone personality, as it zips between hilarious clips and slap-stick gore and violence.
Honey Don’t! is set in Bakersfield, California, though it was shot in New Mexico. Charlie Day, Billy Eichner, and Talia Ryder co-star. The film is said to draw inspiration from noir classics like The Long Goodbye and Fat City.
Evans’ character as the leader of a religious cult and a not-so-secret hedonist on the side marks him as a stand-out fountain of comedic value. As Coen promised, it appears already that the film features “more sex”, with Evans scantily clad in more scenes than one.
In one scene, Evans’ character is being interrogated by Qualley’s character. “Do you drink?” he asks her, attempting to flirt. “Heavily,” she replies, deadpan. “It’s a matter of pride.”
Little of Plaza’s character is seen in the trailer, though she plays Qualley’s love interest and a local police woman interested in helping solve the case. The design, colour scheme and costumes continue the Drive-Away Dolls exploration of the camp aesthetic.
Qualley previously expressed her joy at making the movie: “I just love Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke so damn much and love being on their set. I can hardly put into words how special making that movie was for me and working with Aubrey Plaza, who is one of my favourite actors and people of all time.”
Honey Don’t! will hit cinemas on August 22nd.
