Manchester Aldi store permanently changes name in tribute to Oasis
Supermarket Aldi has confirmed they will keep the Aldeh sign above their store in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, in tribute to Oasis.
After 16 years, Oasis returned to Manchester this month to perform five huge shows at Heaton Park, which was a triumphant homecoming for the Gallagher brothers. Hundreds of thousands of fans attended the concerts, and many more who missed out on tickets still managed to enjoy the shows from ‘Gallagher Hill‘.
For the last month, Manchester has been swept up in Oasis fever, and in anticipation of their return to the city, an Aldi store in Prestwich changed its sign to Aldeh, in celebration of the band as well as the local accent.
Fans have been flocking to the store to see the now-famous sign, which was only supposed to be temporary, but has since been made permanent following a petition from Oasis fans to keep it on a long-term basis.
Giles Hurley, the CEO of Aldi UK, described the response as “supersonic” in a nod to Oasis, before adding, “Oasis fans and proud Mancunians visiting the store to see it for themselves.”
Hurley continued: “Last week, a petition was launched by a local resident calling for us to keep the sign. So naturally, we took to social media to see what our shoppers thought, turns out … people are mad for it and want the sign to stay. I’m pleased to announce that we’ll be keeping the Aldeh sign as a tribute to Manchester. As you were.”
Similarly, Julie Ashfield, the chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, was also blown away by the public’s reaction to the Aldeh sign, stating, “What started as a fun, temporary tribute to Oasis and the local accent has turned into something far bigger. We’ve heard shoppers loud and clear, and we’re absolutely delighted to keep the sign up for the long haul.”
Ashfield added: “It’s been brilliant to see the joy it’s brought to fans and the Manchester community.”
Following the conclusion of their Manchester dates, Oasis have since released a live version of ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol‘ from Heaton Park. Their tour is now set to move to the capital with the first of seven Wembley Stadium dates set to take place on July 25th.
