Maggie Rogers announces third album and shares new single
Maggie Rogers has announced details of her third album, Don’t Forget Me, and shared the title track, providing a folkish return to form.
Set for release on April 12th, Don’t Forget Me is the follow-up to her 2022 record Surrender. Building on the success Rogers’ first found with her breakthrough track ‘Alaska’, her sound continues to mature into a rich storytelling space. Considering love, growing up and how it changes desires, ‘Don’t Forget Me’ is a sweet little track to open a new era.
“I wanted to make an album that sounded like a Sunday afternoon,” Rogers says of the new record. This sentiment suggests a significantly more mellow energy to the all-out emotional chaos held on Surrender.
Rogers’ is looking towards creature comforts and beauty in the small things as she details a mood board for the record, stating, “Worn in denim. A drive in your favorite car. No make up, but the right amount of lipstick. Something classic. The mohair throw and bottle of Whiskey in Joan Didion’s motel room. An old corvette. Vintage, but not overly Americana.”
In short, she wanted to make a reliable album, adding, “I wanted to make an album to belt at full volume alone in your car, a trusted friend who could ride shotgun and be there when you needed her.”
The title track immediately captures this desired energy. Built with not much beyond an acoustic guitar, a piano and Rogers’ distinctive vocals, it’s a classic ballad. ‘Don’t Forget Me’ exists worlds away from the electronic elements captured on her breakout singles ‘Alaska’ and ‘On & On’ with Rogers trading technology for simplicity.
Unlike the intricately layered and built-up sound of her previous two albums, Don’t Forget Me is purposefully pared back. She explained: “This album was written over five days, two songs a day — three days in December 2022, two in January 2023. It was written in chronological order.”
Additionally, Rogers sees this acoustic-led sound as a return to her origins, noting: “In many ways, it feels like coming home, returning to the music and songwriting that grounded me when I first started making art in my bedroom when I was 16.”
