Mac DeMarco shares cover of Haruomi Hosono’s ‘Boku Wa Chotto’
Mac DeMarco has shared his take on Haruomi Hosono track ‘Boku Wa Chotto’. The song is the first glimpse at a covers compilation to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of Hosono’s debut record, Hosono House.
DeMarco’s interpretation of the album’s second track is almost as serendipitous as the original. He sings in Japanese, as soft guitars underscore his words. “I hope my Japanese pronunciation isn’t too terrible,” he shared.
Speaking about the upcoming album, and about the impact of Hosono, DeMarco enthused, “Hosono is my hero, I love all of his music. I am eternally at his every beck and call, it is my honour to be a part of this compilation. I recorded this cover in Joe Bird’s guest room in Paris, August 2023.”
This isn’t the first time DeMarco has paid tribute to the Japanese musician. In 2018, his cover of ‘Honey Moon’ received a limited 7″ vinyl release with the original track featuring on the B-side.
The new song is the first release from the upcoming compilation album, set for release on streaming and vinyl later in the year. It will comprise covers from a selection of other artists from the Stones Throw roster, including John Carroll Kirby and Jerry Paper.
Recorded in a bedroom in Japan and released in 1973, Hosono House marked the Yellow Magic Orchestra leader’s first full-length solo outing. It was a beautiful collection of tracks that saw him favour folk rock over the electronic output of YMO. Over half a century on, it has only increased in importance and influence, even inspiring the title of a Harry Styles record.
