M Night Shyamalan reveals plot for new movie
The new trailer for the next M Night Shyamalan film Trap has been released at CinemaCon 2024, and like many of the director’s previous works, the project is shrouded in darkness and mystery.
The teaser trailer at the film’s presentation sees Josh Harnett play a father who takes his daughter to a pop concert to see her favourite singer, Lady Ravel, who is played by Shyamalan’s real-life daughter Saleka.
The stadium, at which the concert takes place is sold out, but Harnett’s character has booked floor seats for him and his daughter. However, after visiting the bathrooms, the father returns to find several police officers on the scene.
He asks a merchandise desk worker why the police have gathered and learns they have set up the concert in order to catch a notorious serial killer called The Butcher, who likes to kill fans of Lady Raven and chop their bodies into pieces.
Interestingly, there appears to be a twist in the trailer, as is often the case with a Shyamalan movie. Hartnett’s character looks straight into the camera and smiles, which suggests that he might be the serial killer.
No other details were given, but the film promises to be an exciting one. According to attendees of CinemaCon, Trap looks like a unique offering from Shyamalan and different from what he’s provided before, seeing as the events are something that could really happen.
Shortly after the release of his last film, Knock at the Cabin, Shyamalan spoke of his next movie in an interview with NME. He admitted that the plot of the film would be “very unusual” but that he was excited to tell it nonetheless.
“I have a new idea that I’ve started writing,” the director had said at the time. “It’s out in 2024, and it’s very, very exciting. It’s a thriller. It’s very unusual and very new compared to what I’ve been trying to do.”
He added, “I love that feeling, that electricity of ‘wow, I can’t wait for you to see it’. I will say this: The angle of the story is why it’s so exciting. The story might be something that you’ve seen before, but the angle is very, very unique – the point of view”.
Knock at the Cabin received generally positive reviews upon its release and grossed $54.8million at the box office from a $20million budget, so Shyamalan will be hoping for a similar result. Trap is set to arrive in cinemas in the United States on August 9th.
