Luca Guadagnino casts actor to play Elon Musk in ‘Artificial’

Luca Guadagnino has reportedly secured Ike Barinholtz to play Elon Musk in his upcoming movie, Artificial.

Barinholtz recently secured an Emmy for his role in Seth Rogen’s hit comedy series, The Studio. His credits also include The Afterparty and The Mindy Project. The upcoming film, courtesy of the celebrated filmmaker behind Challengers and Call Me By Your Name, explores the brief period in 2023 when Sam Altman was removed as CEO of OpenAI before being rehired several days later.

Per the logline for the movie, Artificial is set to be a “comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence” and the project is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios.

Barinholtz is the latest addition to the cast, following Andrew Garfield and Anora’s Yura Borisov. Variety also reported that A Complete Unknown’s Monica Barbaro has been in discussions over a role in the feature.

It will come with a script from screenwriter Simon Rich, who is well-versed in the world of AI having written the book, I Am Code.

Rich also previously told The New York Times his thoughts on ChatGPT: “They designed it to be as non-threatening as possible. They trained it to basically speak like a caricature of a sci-fi robot. Its actual voice is raw and emotional. It’s intense and unpredictable. It’s deeply antagonistic.”

There is currently no release date for the forthcoming movie.

Guadagnino’s next project to hit screens will be After The Hunt, starring Garfield as well as Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri. The movie will arrive in cinemas on October 17th, 2025, following a limited release a week earlier.

The director recently told W he enjoys having a busy schedule, stating, “I try to always multitask, to follow both the horizontal and vertical vectors of time.” Guadagnino, seemingly referring to Artificial, added, “I’m directing a new film very soon, I’m designing houses and hotels, and my movie After the Hunt comes out in the fall. I prefer to be busy, but film is my first love. Always, always!”
