Lorde shares new single ‘Hammer’ from upcoming album ‘Virgin’

Lorde has released her third and final single, ‘Hammer’, from her highly anticipated new album, Virgin, set to arrive on June 27th.

Seven days before the release of her full album, Lorde dropped the new single, which echoes the astute contemplation and electronic fizz of previous tracks. The New Zealander tracks her unpredictability with lyrics like “don’t know if it’s love or if it’s ovulation.” She details sexual urges in the next line, where she sings, “when you’re holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.”

Lorde has spoken plenty recently about her shifting gender identity. She wore a backless dress at the MET Gala, and said of the stylistic choice: “All will be revealed. I just love the open back. To me it represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?”

Now, Lorde’s lyrics contemplate and reaffirm her fluid gender identity, with the line “Some days I’m a woman, some days I’m a man.” Similarly, in the previously released single ‘Man of the Year‘, Lorde also dives into her experience of masculinity, highlighted in the accompanying music video. Here, Lorde is realistic about where she is at, finishing the song with lyrics, “It’s a fucked up world, been to hell and back / but I’ve sent you a postcard from the edge.”

Lorde has also teased an accompanying video for ‘Hammer’, which shows the musician running through the grass in the beloved London green space, Hampstead Heath. The location was revealed after a fan caught her filming and shared it on social media.

The Australian indie-pop star will kick off her sold-out Ultrasound World Tour in September, which will hit multiple nights at iconic venues including Madison Square Garden, London’s O2 Arena, AFAS Live in Amsterdam, and The Anthem in Washington, DC.

Virgin will be released on June 27th.
