Lorde explains Met Gala outfit: “I feel like a man and a woman”
While speaking on the red carpet at the Met Gala on May 5th, Lorde explained her outfit choice and said it represents “where I’m at gender-wise.”
The theme for this year’s event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City was ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, which Lorde put her own spin on by donning a Thom Browne silver two-piece set and low-key jewellery.
In an interview with Emma Chamberlain before the event, Lorde said of her attire, “This is custom Thom Browne, It’s kind of my creation. It’s something of an easter egg.”
The ‘What Was That‘ singer continued: “All will be revealed. I just love the open back. To me it represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?”
Her latest comments at the Met Gala follow similar remarks she made regarding gender during a conversation with artist Martine Syms for Document Journal last week. In the interview, Lorde revealed that during the recording process of her new album, Virgin, she “was also coming into my masculinity a bit more as well.”
She expanded: “I had come back from London to New York after this period of great turbulence in my personal life. Becoming single, but also really facing my body stuff head-on, and starting to feel my gender broadening a little bit.”
Lorde continued to reflect: “Just being back in my house and feeling this big wave of grief. I just kept thinking, What was all of that? Whether it was my seven-year relationship or a pandemic or sacrificing my body to my career since I was 16 or 17. This feeling of, Oh, my God, so much has moved through me. And there’s so much mystery and pain.”
Virgin is set for release on June 27th and has been teased with the lead single ‘What Was That’. The track was premiered in New York at a public event, which was shut down by police due to overcrowding fears.
