Lorde announces new album, ‘Virgin’
After teasing a new project for several weeks, Lorde has just announced her new album, Virgin, which will be released on June 27th.
The project will be her first full-length work in four years; her last LP was the 2021 album Solar Power, which followed on from Melodrama in 2017 and her debut Pure Heroine in 2013.
Lead single ‘What Was That’ has already reached top spot on Spotify in the US following its release This is Lorde’s first US number one on the streaming platform since breakout song ‘Royals’ in 2013. It also landed at three in the UK and five globally, prognosticating that this album may be a contender for the top of the charts.
The single hit the headlines after Lorde encouraged fans to gather in New York’s Washington Square Park to hear her unreleased comeback single. However, due to overcrowding, police shut the event down before it began.
Despite this, the music video includes footage from her surprise appearance, as she appeared for fans 2 hours after the designated time. The rest of the video sees Lorde singing along to the tune in front of a sprawling urban backdrop shot in a home-video style.
Notable lyrics from Lorde’s ‘What Was That’ include: “I’m missing you/ And all the things we used to do/ MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up/ We kissed for hours straight but baby, what was that?/ I remember saying then/ This is the best cigarette of my life/ Well I want you just like that.”
The announcement is scarce on details, except that Virgin is said to promise “a bold evolution in her sound and storytelling.” The post on Instagram was captioned with the album’s title, and nothing else.
