Lorde confirms new single ‘What Was That’
After four years, the New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde has announced the upcoming release of a new single, ‘What Was That.’ Lorde shared the title and what appears to be the single’s cover art on her social media.
The photograph, shot by Talia Chetrit, shows Lorde up close and personal, with dewy, shiny skin dripping at the chin. She wears a red T-shirt and looks up at the camera. The new music is said to be “out soon”, according to the ‘Royals’ singer.
This announcement comes shortly after Lorde teased new material in her first-ever video posted on TikTok. The 15-second clip, posted on April 9th, showed her walking through Washington Square Park in New York.
In the background of the video, a synth-pop song played, quintessential to Lorde’s style. The lyrics accompanying the video were: “Since I was 17/ I gave you everything/ Now we wake from a dream/ Well baby, what was that?”
Lorde’s pending album would be her fourth studio offering. Her last release was the 2021 album Solar Power, which followed on from Melodrama in 2017 and her debut Pure Heroine in 2013.
Lorde recently appeared as a special guest at Coachella, joining Charli XCX’s set for a rendition of ‘Girl, So Confusing’ in a laid-back grey outfit. She also appeared with Charli XCX on stage in New York in September to also sing their collaborative track. On the song, Lorde’s personal lyrics recount her experience being “at war with” her body.
In March 2024, she also contributed a cover of ‘Take Me to the River’ to the Talking Heads tribute album Everyone’s Getting Involved.
