Liam Gallagher claims Blur make “music for posh brats” before revealing favourite song

After almost 30 years, the battle of Britpop continues to rage on. Liam Gallagher has delivered new digs towards Oasis’ old 1990s rival, Blur.

As Blur prepare to play Coachella, they did a pre-festival warm-up show in Los Angeles. On stage, Damon Albarn spoke about the phenomenon of people trying to claim writing credits for their song ‘Song 2’, a track that’s main lyric is simply, “woohoo”.

“Because of the nature of American law, if someone gets a lawyer… they can come quite a long way with absolutely no grounds,” Albarn said on stage. “Someone else this year – not only is it that person who’s convinced they’d written it, but there was another person who was convinced. Firstly, I wonder why it’s only that song that they’re interested in.”

Then, in typical Gallagher fashion, the musician took to X to share his feelings on the comment. Responding to a Blur fan page, he didn’t wince his words when he wrote, “Gotta be out of your box to claim to have written that song absolute TURDOS”.

Clearly not a fan of the 1997 track, he took it even further. When someone responded to say the track was “better than any song you wrote Liam”, the Oasis legend came back swinging.

“I could write that standing on my head you spunkbubble,” he hit back, adding, “It’s music for posh brats”.

However, the musician then suddenly seemed to change his tone. Blur and Oasis have been set against each other since the mid-1990s. In what was called ‘the battle of Britpop’, the two bands went directly head to head for the number one slot in 1995 with ‘Country House’ and ‘Roll With It’. The Gallagher tongue was just as sharp and witty back then when they deemed Blur “chimney sweep music”. For years, the bands played up the feud.

Surprisingly, it seems they might actually have a secret fan in Gallagher. After his negative comments, the fan pages asked the musician, “What Blur song would you like to have written, Liam?” to which he replied, “‘Sing’”. When asked, “Does sing make you cry Liam?” he added, “Like a baby”.

By choosing a track that sits on Blur’s debut album, Gallagher shows that he holds more interest in the band than he lets on, and maybe their 1990s fight was all a front to hide the fact that the singer has always held a soft spot for the group.
