Liam Gallagher was last night recognised as a bonafide rock icon by MTV as they awarded the former Oasis frontman for his contribution to rock and roll. The singer made a short but sweet acceptance speech.
The Why Me? Why Not? singer not only accepted the award but also gave a very special performance for the crowd in Seville performing new track ‘Once’ as well as karaoke favourite and Oasis stalwart, ‘Wonderwall’.
When he was accepting the award he said, “Thank you, man. I won’t keep you too long but I want to congratulate Seville for having a lovely city. I want to congratulate MTV for recognising my brilliance. Thanks for the award. I wear it well.”
A far cry from some of his previous acceptance speeches which have featured LG both slagging of Blur and offering most of the crowd a fight, this one was a quick affair. It’s perhaps a mark of the man who, despite his larger than average gob, has managed to let his solo work do the talking.
Performing the Why Me? Why Not? song ‘Once’, Liam was in fine form. Using his classic Manc accent to add a little extra sauce on each lyric. As ‘once’ ended the famous chords of ‘Wonderwall’ sent ripples of excitement across the audience. An unusual treat, to hear Liam sing the song that Noel took vocal duty on during the Oasis years got an extra special lyric change too: “there are many things I would like to say to you…but I don’t speak Spanish.”
