Lana Del Rey shares cover of Irving Berlin’s ‘Blue Skies’

Singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey has revealed her latest single, a cover of Irving Berlin’s 1926 classic ‘Blue Skies’.

The release is taken from the upcoming soundtrack for the Apple TV+ series The New Look. Curated and produced by Bleachers lead singer Jack Antonoff, Lana’s effort is the third single to be taken from the hand-crafted selection of tracks, following releases from Florence + the Machine as well as The 1975.

The New Look centres around the lives of iconic fashion designers Christian Dior, played by Ben Mendelsohn, and Coco Chanel, portrayed byJuliette Binoche, as they attempt to navigate the war-torn landscape of France during the 1940s. The ten-part series features a star-studded cast, and an equally impressive soundtrack.

The programme’s soundtrack is composed entirely of contemporary performers reimagining classic tracks from the period of The New Look. For instance, The 1975 previously released their version of ‘Now Is The Hour’, a track popularised by Vera Lynn. The full tracklisting reveals Nick Cave taking on ‘La Vie En Rose’ and Beabadoobee reworking ‘It’s Only A Paper Moon’.

Del Rey’s version of ‘Blue Skies’ features all the grace and elegance that her fans have come to expect. Testament to the timeless quality of her vocals, the track does not stray too far from the original, providing an interesting insight into what it would have sounded like had Lana Del Rey been active a century ago.

Antonoff is a frequent collaborator with Del Rey, producing a variety of her tracks from 2019’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! all the way through to her most recent album release, Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd

The first three episodes of The New Look are available to stream now on Apple TV+, with the subsequent seven episodes due to be released on a weekly basis, starting on February 21st.
