As people line the streets of the United States amid intense protests surrounding the murder of George Floyd, Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic has taken to social media to controversially praise Donald Trump.
George Floyd, an African-American man from Minnesota, was murdered by white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin when knelt on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds during an arrest. Floyd, who was handcuffed and lying face down on the road, was unresponsive for 2 minutes and 53 seconds while the officer held his knee down on his neck.
Three other arresting officers, Thomas K. Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng, also held Floyd down for this period. The incident, caught both on local CCTV and by video recordings secured bystanders, showed Floyd repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe” while the officer held his knee on the back of his neck.
The death has sparked mass protests across the United States with all four officers involved being fired the next day. Chauvin, the white officer who held down his knee, has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
While pressure mounts on Donald Trump, the US President emerged after days of absence to make his first public comments on the current situation. Refusing to comment on racism and police brutality, Trump detailed his plans to roll out the National Guard onto the streets. “First, we are ending the riots and lawlessness that has spread throughout our country,” he said. “We will end it now. Today I have recommended to every governor to deploy the National Guard in sufficient numbers that we dominate the streets.”
Trump continued: “If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”
As tear gas rains downs on the public, as more peaceful protestors become the victim of police brutality, Trump’s lack of sincerity to the problem at hand was met by criticism by most. However, former Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic took to social media to somewhat bizarrely praise the President. “Wow!!! I know many of you can’t stand him, however, Trump knocked it out of the park with this speech,” Novoselic wrote on social media.
Novoselic added: “I drove from Wahkiakum to Seattle and back today and have seen countless fellow Washingtonians on the road. I did not see any violence—but a Tesla supercharging station at an Auburn mall was closed off by police. Driving, I passed by regular folks who are already stressed by the COVID. Now, social media and television are looping images of societal breakdown.
“The violence, (and not the protests) appear as a leftist insurrection. Imagine if so-called ‘patriot militias’ were raising this kind of hell? If this were the case, left wing people would welcome federal intervention. Most Americans want peace in their communities and President Trump spoke to this desire. Never mind the legal details that few understand—Trump said he would stop the violence and this speaks to many.”
Novoselic has since made the Facebook page private following a backlash from his fans. Now though, some followers managed to capture a screenshot.
